The airport of Udon Thani UTH
Udon Thani has a modern airport (UTH), which is about 7 km from the city centre.
For those coming from distant destinations, flying is the fastest, easiest and most comfortable option. Currently there are direct flights to Bangkok, Phuket, Hat Yai, U Tapao Pattaya and Chiang Mai. Minibuses are available at the airport taking passengers to the city at a reasonable price.
Alternatively you can take the Songtheaw no. 5 to Nong Prajak, or take a meter taxi or samlor. The airport is about 1 hour away by car from the border crossing to Laos and is therefore used by many passengers as a stopover before going on to Laos. Several companies offer a minibus transfer to the Laotian border in Nongkai, or even to Vientiane in Laos at a cheap rate.
Outside the passenger terminal, the area for both arrivals and departures, there are is a large free car park. Immediately outside the terminal is a drop-off zone in which passengers can be dropped off at the terminal with their luggage.
The layout of the terminal is very simple: you enter the terminal through the first entrance and you find yourself already in the departure area. Here are the ticket counters of the airlines Thai Airways, Bangkok Air, Thai Lion Air, Nok Air and Air Asia.
After these counters is the check in desk.
After check in you get on the escalator to the departure lounge and security. On the first floor there is also a buffet restaurant, where you can eat Thai dishes before the flight, or just pass the time.
At the other end of the terminal is the arrival area.
The Udon Thani airport is operated by the Royal Thai Air Force. Currently (October 2014) Udon Thani operates up to 20 flights per day. The runway of the airport is 3,048 metres long and 45 metres wide. The new tower building is 35 metres tall.
From the tower there is a fantastic view of the airport and the surrounding area.
