Thailand - Mukdahan Phupha Toep National Park

Mukdahan, on the Mekong River in the northeast of Thailand, not only has an interesting Indochina market, but has a scenic gem in its National Park.

As everywhere else in Isaan it has a bedrock of sandstone and shale layers, but thanks to the mountainous terrain it has been eroded over time by wind and rain. The peculiarity is that the sandstone is composed of alternating hard (dark) and softer (bright) layers. This leads to so-called selective erosion - the soft is eroded faster than the hard, and as a result bizarre rock formations litter the landscape, like giant mushrooms or UFOs.
