Numerous cases of diphtheria in Udon Thani

11.11.2012 - 09:11

In Udon Thani in the last few weeks more than 100 cases of diphtheria have been recorded. Several people have died from the disease. Free mass vaccinations have been given in schools, temples and public hospitals, to prevent the spread of the highly infectious bacterial disease. Meanwhile, it was reported that there will be shortages of the vaccine. Diphtheria affects the upper respiratory tract and can lead to serious long-term problems or even death. The disease is transmitted from person to person by breathing infected air or physical contact, but rarely via contaminated objects. A primary vaccination protects for about 10 years, and should be regularly refreshed.
