Thai-Chinese Forces Complete Joint Mekong Patrol

KUNMING (Xinhua) — The 93rd Mekong River joint patrol by China, Laos, Myanmar and Thailand concluded Friday as three Chinese law enforcement vessels returned to Guanlei Port in southwest China’s Yunnan Province. A total of 105 law enforcement officers from the four countries participated in the mission, according to the Yunnan provincial public security department.

Surat Thani men claim trio tried to shake down cockle trader for B5 million

SURAT THANI: A cockle trader who accused three police officers attached to Provincial Police Region 8 of trying to extort 5 million baht from him has vowed not to let the rogue officers escape punishment. Anucha Binmusa, 46, and two other men gave their accounts to a fact-finding panel set up by Provincial Police Region 8 to look into the allegations.

New patients are Italian man in Phuket and two Thai returnees in quarantine

The government on Saturday reported three new cases of Covid-19 — an Italian living in Phuket and two Thais returning from abroad — raising the nationwide total to 3,040, and no new deaths. The Italian man, 49, was asymtomatic and tested positive on Friday. He had a history of being in crowded places, said Dr Panprapa Yongtrakul, assistant spokeswoman for the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA).

Education Ministry takes flak for child-abuse failings

A network of 92 organisations has called on the Education Ministry to step up proactive measures to stamp out sex attacks on schoolchildren following recent abuse scandals in three provinces. Network representatives on Friday handed a letter to Education Minister Nataphol Teepsuwan urging him to take action.

Sex workers left in cold by outbreak

Thousands of sex workers have been denied access to relief cash amid the coronavirus outbreak despite their contribution to the once-thriving tourism industry, a forum was told. Suparnee Pongruengphant, the project manager for Gender Equality and Social Inclusion at the United Nations Development Programme, said an agency survey has shown that up to 200,000 sex workers in Thailand suddenly lost their jobs when the government ordered the closure of nightlife venues in late March to curb the spread of Covid-19.

Mother forced toddler to swallow bleach, say cops

A woman in Pathum Thani has been arrested for allegedly forcing her toddler to swallow bleach to make him look sick for an online advertisement selling her products, according to a local police source. The source said the boy was rescued and is now under the care of a shelter for children in the province.

Top doctor downplays virus risk from barbershop case

A barbershop in Bangkok's Pracha Chuen area has been closed and eight staff quarantined as a precaution after a 72-year-old customer tested positive for Covid-19, a senior health official said on Friday. Luckily, no other customers were there at the same time, and the man as well as all the staff observed health protocols, Dr Sopon Iamsirithaworn, director of the Disease Control Department's Bureau of General Communicable Diseases, said.
