Russian tourist in coma after Patong hotel balcony fall

A Russian tourist remains unconscious in hospital after falling four floors from the balcony of his Patong hotel. Police say the man, Daniil Solovev, is in “a serious but stable condition”. Police were called to the accommodation on Nanai Road hotel at 11am on Sunday morning. By the time they arrived, Solovev had already been rushed to hospital.

BTS Again Floats Plan to Close, Rebuild Saphan Taksin Station

BANGKOK — Skytrain officials on Wednesday hinted that the long-delayed plan to expand a popular station close to Taksin Bridge may be implemented within the “beginning of this year.” After years of lengthy discussions and uncertainty concerning the fate of BTS Saphan Taksin station, the rail operator said the station will be closed for expansion works for 40 months and construction will likely begin later this year, tho

Anutin floats home working in light of PM2.5

Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has come up with an idea for employees of private companies to work from home, saying that this would probably help reduce the PM2.5 smog. Mr Anutin, who earlier posted the idea on Facebook, said on Tuesday he would like the private sector to first put this into practice as it is more practical than the government sector.

Mum despairs over lotto winner's drug use

SI SA KET: A man who won a six million baht lottery prize in June has been arrested after his mother told police her son had since become a crazed drug addict. Kom Poka, 56, asked police to arrest her 32-year-old son, Chainarong Poka. She said he went on a destructive drug-fuelled rampage and tried to burn their house down, according to Pol Lt Col Prayong Janchin, inspector of Khukhan police station.

Phuket airport screening Wuhan arrivals for coronavirus

PHUKET: The Phuket international aiport has been equipped with a machine to screen all passengers arriving from Wuhan, China for a new strain of coronavirus, according to Rewat Areerob, assistant secretary to Deputy Public Health Minister Sathit Pitutecha. Mr Rewat said this after an inspection of the screening Chinese tourists from the city of Wuhan, the origin of the outbreak.

British tourists injured in Pattaya-bound van accident

CHON BURI: Eight British tourists were injured, three of them seriously, when the van they were travelling in crashed into the median railing on the Bangkok-Chon Buri motorway on Tuesday morning. The accident occurred about 10.30am between kilometre markers 118-119 on the Pattaya-bound side of the motorway in Bang Lamung district.

Thick smog in the North, bad air in Bangkok

Thick, unhealthy smog continues to plague much of the North, with the worst pollution in Lampang province, and Bangkok residents were afflicted by unsafe fine-dust levels in eight districts on Tuesday. The Pollution Control Dept on Tuesday reported unsafe levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometres and less in diameter (PM2.5) at 11 of the 15 air quality measurement stations it operates in the North.

One killed, two seriously injured in Pattaya accident

CHON BURI: A woman was killed and two other people seriously injured in an accident involving a pickup truck and two motorcycle taxis in Pattaya on Tuesday morning, police said. The accident occurred about 2.30am when the pickup, a Toyota Vigo, veered across the middle line at a curve in Soi Chalerm Phrakiat 6 of tambon Nong Prue, Bang Lamung district, and collided with two oncoming motorcycle taxis in the opposite lane.
