Smell of burning before truck exploded in flames at NGV station

PATHUM THANI: An NGV filling station employee told police he noticed a smell like something burning shortly before a trailer truck exploded in flames early on Thursday. The incident occurred at the PTT’s Srisomboonpattana filling station near the motorway in tambon Khlong Si about 3.30am, said Pol Lt Supanat Bunditthai.

Thailand to Set up Center to Combat ‘Fake News’

BANGKOK — Thailand’s government on Wednesday announced a plan to set up a center to combat unverified news on social media platforms, rejecting concerns that it might be used to suppress free speech. The planned center’s goal would be to fight all kinds of fake news, with a focus on misinformation about disasters and financial matters, Minister of Digital Economy and Society Buddhipongse Punnakanta said.

Court returns B24m lottery winnings to victorious Charoon

The Kanchanaburi Court on Thursday returned 24 million baht in lottery prize-money to retired policeman Charoon Wimool, who won his court battle with teacher Preecha Kraikruan in June. The court lifted the freeze on the money, held in a bank account of Pol Lt Charoon, 63, at his request.

‘Drunk’ Air Force Officer Fires Gun at Police Station

BANGKOK — An air force lieutenant was arrested Thursday morning after discharging a handgun in front of a police station in a drunken rage, police said. The serviceman, who remains unnamed, allegedly drove to Bang Khen Police Station at about 3.30am and fired a shot from his Glock handgun. His brother was being questioned by police inside the station for starting a bar fight, officers said.

Small schools to stay open amid mergers

The Office of the Basic Education Commission (Obec) says it will keep nearly 2,000 small schools open, but has vowed to continue its merger plan. Commission secretary-general, Suthep Chittayawong, said on Wednesday school mergers will be decided case-by-case, based on the capabilities of each school.

Phuket’s water bosses claim there will be enough water

Well into the second half of the Phuket wet season and the three main dams are well below capacity, Bang Wad Dam just over 13% capacity and the Bang Neow Dam in Thalang district around 5%, mostly unusable muddy ponds. The newer Khlong Katha in Chalong is at a much higher level, about 30% of capacity.

Weeks of Fire Destroyed Almost 14,500 Rai of Forest and Farms in Southern Thailand

NAKHON SI THAMMARAT — Officials say a combination of drought and suspected arson has destroyed forest and farmlands the combined area of 2,300 rugby fields. Authorities have few leads on who started the fires. Since July 29, fires have destroyed 14,493 rai, or 2,318.88 hectares, of forest and farmlands in Pa Phru Kuan Kreng and surrounding areas.

First Asean-US maritime exercise set for Sept in Thailand

UN Warns Mekong River is a Disaster Hotspot

BANGKOK — The Mekong River basin was identified as a major disaster risk hotspot by the United Nations today. Poor people living close to the river suffer high exposure to flood and drought, according to a report released today. A UN official also called for the nations in the region to work and mitigate the risks together.

Official complaint filed with the DSI over The Peaks Residences Condominium in Phuket

Bangkok MP Sira Jenjaka has gone ahead and filed a long list of formal complaints over The Peaks Residences Condominium project being built in the hills above Kata Noi in Phuket. The Palang Pracharat MP has also claimed to have had death threats made against him over his investigations and accusations over the condo’s land titles and ownership in recent weeks.
