Domestic flights soar at Chiang Mai airport

CHIANG MAI: The number of domestic flights at Chiang Mai airport has risen more than 50% since Covid-19 restrictions began to be eased. Chiang Mai airport director Amornrak Xumsai Na Ayudhaya said on Thursday that the number of daily flights so far this month has reached 68, up from a daily average of 40 in June.

Planks seized from temple, abbot disappears

KANCHANABURI: More than 500 illegally processed wood planks were seized from a temple in Sai Yok district while the abbot disappeared during a search on Thursday. Pairoj Khiewkaew, head of a forest protection unit in Sai Yok district, on Thursday led a combined team of forestry officials, soldiers, border police and local officials to search Wat Nong Phla Sew in tambon Sri Mongkhol.

2 arrested, 1,420kg crystal meth seized in Narathiwat

NARATHIWAT: Two men have been arrested and 1,420kg of crystal methamphetamine found hidden in a trailer truck in Tak Bai district of Narathiwat in the early hours of Thursday. A combined team of police, soldiers and local officials was dispatched to Padador village in tambon Na Nak of Tak Bai district following information that a large quantity of illicit drugs would be smuggled into this border area.

6 new Covid quarantine cases Thursday

The government on Thursday reported six new coronavirus cases detected in quarantine, taking the country to 38 days without a local transmission, while global Covid-19 cases rose at a record pace. All six new cases were Thai nationals who recently returned from Indonesia, South Africa and Sudan.

Phuket nightlife restarts with a whimper

Provincial authorities inspected Phuket's nightlife area on Soi Bang La during the night, but many premises remained shuttered.

Prayut Defends 223 Billion Baht Defense Budget in Pandemic

BANGKOK — Opposition MPs on Wednesday said the massive defense spending should be slashed and priority given to the economy revival during the coronavirus pandemic. But PM Prayut Chan-ocha, who also serves as defense minister, said the 223.4 billion baht budget is needed to defend the country’s sovereignty. The proposed budget is the fourth highest among the ministries.

Police warn bar owners to obey law

The Metropolitan Police Bureau on Wednesday told night-entertainment operators and soapy massage parlours to comply with measures to curb the Covid-19 pandemic or their businesses would be closed again. Pol Lt Gen Piya Uthayo, assistant national police chief, said his boss Pol Gen Chaktip Chaijinda had instructed officers to make sure entertainment venue operators complied with disease control regulations and that both the service providers and their customers understood the new norm.

Pattaya Bars and Nightclubs Reopen, But Few Customers Return

Gov’t Moves to Crack Down on Online Sales of Booze

BANGKOK — The country’s top alcohol regulator on Thursday approved a draft regulation to ban any online booze sales. The move came after alcohol watchdog groups urged the government to crack down on the online sales of booze, which surged during the pandemic lockdown. Deputy health minister Satit Pituthecha said the new rule aims to prevent consumers from easy access to alcohol beverages.
