Tycoon spends night in jail

KANCHANABURI: Construction tycoon Premchai Karnasuta ended up spending last night behind bars at the Thong Pha Phum prison after the Appeal Court slapped him with a sentence of more than three years for the illegal possession of a protected animal, carrying firearms in public and supporting poaching.

More Tourists, Less Spending for 2019 New Year’s Eve Season

BANGKOK — More holidaymakers are headed to Thailand to bid farewell to 2019 than the same period last year, though they are expected to spend less per person, a senior tourism official said Thursday. At least 546,000 tourists will arrive in Thailand for the New Year’s Eve season, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand governor Yuthasak Supasorn, slightly up from 520,000 visitors in 2018. The government said it has several economic stimulus packages lined up to boost year-end spending among domestic tourists.

Govt asked to lower cold-weather emergency threshold

The Finance Ministry has been asked to ease aid distribution rules as the country grapples with a cold snap that saw temperatures plunge to around 8-15 degrees Celsius in the countryside. Kanyanat Srijai, deputy mayor of tambon Ngim in Phayao's Pong district, said that under Finance Ministry current regulations, emergency funding can only be distributed when temperatures in a defined area drop below 8C for three consecutive days.

More smog over greater Bangkok

Smog again covered greater Bangkok on Thursday morning, with unsafe dust levels reported at 42 air-quality monitoring stations, with the worst in tambon Maha Chai of Muang district in Samut Sakhon. The levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometres and less in diameter measured at the 42 stations ranged from 34 to 99 microgrammes per cubic metre of air (μg/m³) in Bangkok and surrounding provinces, Pollution Control Department (PCD) director-general Pralong Damrongthai said on Thursday.

Tycoon Premchai's jail term increased in black-leopard case

Indonesian woman arrested for gold theft has priors in Thailand

NAKHON SI THAMMARAT: An Indonesian woman wanted for the theft of a necklace from a gold shop in Thung Song district last month has been caught in Sa Kaeo province, and found to have a prior record of thefts across Thailand. Erri Weneae, 37, confessed to having stolen the gold necklace in Thung Song district, according to police, and said it was the first time she had done anything like that.

Persian cat has two-headed kitten

RATCHABURI: Persian cat has given birth to a rare two-headed kitten and her owner is determined to keep it alive as long as possible. Chabaprai Nilpet, 52, of Moo 2 village of tambon Don Krabueang in Ban Pong district, said the mother cat gave birth to a normal kitten on Monday, but appeared to have difficulty delivering more.

New govt website on use of medical cannabis

The Public Health Ministry is launching a website designed to provide information about the use of medical cannabis for public reference. Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said on Wednesday the website (www.medicalcannabis.go.th) would provide a comprehensive source of information about medical cannabis, covering topics ranging from cultivation to safe consumption methods.
