POLICE KILLERS LINKED TO SHOCKING MAYO DISTRICT MURDERS CAUGHT ON CCTV Police suspect the gunmen who shot dead two highway police and a police assistant in Pattani on Friday night are the same group who killed four soldiers in Mayo district last year. Pol Lt Col Narawee Binwaearong, deputy superintendent of Sai Buri police station, yesterday led a team to comb the site of Friday's attack on Pattani-Narathiwat 43 Road in Ban Karubee.

Officials plan to deport 'illegal' youngsters

The Interior Ministry has come under fire for a Children's Day "gift" that will involve a change in the law and the deportation of stateless children born in Thailand. The legal change will see the children's status altered from one that is indeterminate to "illegal immigrant", allowing them to be deported to their parents' home country.

Prayuth tells troops to call off ASTV rally

SOLDIERS PROTEST FOR 2ND DAY Army chief Prayuth Chan-ocha has ordered his troops to call off their protest against the ASTV Manager newspaper after more than 30 soldiers gathered outside the ASTV headquarters Saturday. The soldiers arrived outside the ASTV head office on Phra Athit Road at 10.30am Saturday for a second day of protests.

Dept says pollution, rubbish woes worsen

The quality of water is deteriorating, the amount of accumulated garbage increasing and air pollution worsening, the Department of Pollution Control says. Revealing its findings on pollution last year in its 2012 annual report, Wichien Jungrungruang, the department chief, said the number of places where the quality of seawater was excellent fell by almost half, from 36% in 2011 to 15% last year.

Police boast massive drug haul

More than 2.2 million speed pills and 47kg of crystal methamphetamine, widely known as ya ice, have been seized by police in three major drug busts. Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yubamrung, who oversees the government's drug suppression policy, and police chief Adul Saengsingkaew announced the hauls at Royal Thai Police Headquarters yesterday.

Ambulance refusal was 'protocol'

The refusal to use an ambulance on standby at parliament for a journalist who suffered a stroke was protocol, not discrimination, deputy House speaker Charoen Chankomol said yesterday. Sakol Sandhiratne, 42, a photographer from The Nation newspaper, suffered a cerebral haemorrhage while on assignment at parliament on Thursday. Despite requests from his colleagues, medical staff refused to allow the standby ambulance to take him to hospital.

Soldiers protest against 'woman on period' criticism of Prayuth

About 50 soldiers gathered yesterday outside the ASTV Manager head office to protest against the newspaper's criticisms of army chief Prayuth Chan-ocha. The group's leader, Sgt Maj Anuchit Silpawathee, said Gen Prayuth was "the heart of the army" and remarks on the ASTV Manager website had damaged troop morale.

Changing young hairstyles hits barbers

NAKHON RATCHASIMA - Local barbers say the trend for young people to wear their hair longer is affecting business, and it's going to get worse now the Education Ministry has confirmed schools must be more lenient. Some barbers complained that business was down as much as 20%.

Russian dies in motorbike accident

CHON BURI - A Russian woman died in a motorcycle accident in Pattaya on Thursday. Pattaya police responded to a report of an accident involving two Russian tourists on Beach Road in tambon Nong Prue, Bang Lamung district of Chon Buri province. At the scene, police and emergency workers found Julia Zerkino, 27, lying on the ground bleeding profusely. She had many injuries and died on the way to hospital.
