Health insurance for foreigners: Udon Thani to remain on the waiting list

22.11.2013 - 13:33

In Udon Thani no new applications will be processed for inclusion in the state's health insurance scheme until further notice.
Whilst in the province of Chiang Mai, for example, the conditions and the procedures for the admission of foreigners into the scheme have been clearly worked out, Udon Thani still only operates a waiting list for applicants.

On 15 November the Health Ministry in Bangkok released an English-language document on the website of HIGTHAI insurance. The document provides information about the target group of the scheme, as well as the costs and benefits, without going into details. Click here to see the document.

Today we have learned that the health authority in Udon Thani still has not processed this information. The precise rules that are already established in Chiang Mai, however, they say are not yet available here. However, they could already exclude that unlike in Chiang Mai there will be no opportunity for emergency care at private hospitals in case of an emergency. A contractual agreement between the private hospitals in Udon Thani and the state's  Social Health Insurance for Thais, has been terminated in the past by those hospitals.

We have been unable to find out when the health insurance scheme in Udon will again allow applications from foreigners.
