Security at the ATM

In Thailand, ATMs are increasingly manipulated by criminals using electronic devices to get access to the cardholder's bank details. Their devices are often well disguised, very small and perfect. The following safety instructions should be observed:

  • In principle, it is recommended you need to plan ahead, so you do not get into the position of having to withdraw money under unfavorable conditions.
  • Ideally, use ATMs that are in or just outside  a bank branch, during the opening times of this bank. Should anything go wrong, you can then directly ask the bank to get the problem resolved. (see picture below)
  • Before use of the machine it should be inspected for any mounted electronic devices. The card slot, the keyboard and the money slot are frequently manipulated by criminals to gain access to the assets of the cardholder.
  • To exclude the possibility of spying, cover the screen with your hand as much as possible when entering your data.
  • Ideally, withdraw money from the machine with a friend standing directly behind, or take heed not to be surprised from behind.
  • A stolen or lost card should be reported immediately so that all transactions on your account can be stopped immediately and you won't be punished for any unauthorized use.

ATTENTION!!

At Thai ATMs the card is returned at the end of the transaction, unlike machines in Europe that give back your card before the cash payment. Unfamiliar customers often forget to wait for their card once they've got their money.
