ID card for foreigners in Thailand

Since the beginning of 2016 ID cards for foreigners living in Thailand can be obtained from the local municipality office (Amphoe / Amphur office). One prerequisite is that the applicant must already have a yellow house book

According to media reports about foreigners living in Pattaya who have a yellow house book, the authorities are now insisting that they have a Thai ID card as well. It is surely only a matter of time before these regulations will spread to other provinces.

Applying for the card is easy and quick, if the necessary documents are brought with the application.

In the case of the applicant not having a Thai marriage certificate:

  • Yellow house book, original and photocopy
  • Passport, original and photocopy
  • 60 baht fee

You may also be asked for a Thai driving license, if you have one, original and photocopy.

In the case of the applicant having a Thai spouse, married in Thailand:

  • Yellow house book, original and photocopy
  • Passport, original and photocopy
  • Thai marriage certificate, original and photocopy or, alternatively the Kor Ror 2 (confirmation of registration of marriage in the marriage register)
  • 60 baht fee

You may also be asked for a Thai driving license, if you have one, original and photocopy. The Thai spouse does not necessarily have to be present, should the applicant have sufficient Thai language skills.

On the application form, the blood type is entered in addition to the personal information of the applicant. In Udon Thani the application form is filled in by an official. Photographs for the card will be taken at the office.

On the card, the registered address, date of birth, the name, the validity period (10 years), the personal identification number from the yellow house book and the ID card number are printed. The back of the card notes that the ID card must be carried by the owner, and does not replace the passport for cross-border travel. Thus the card does not nagate the requirement for foreigners in Thailand to carry their passport at all times!

The purpose of the card is to serve as a faster way to identify the carrier.

I got mine several months ago here in Udon. The only other thing they wanted to know was my blood type.
