Wat Phu Tok - Wat Jetiyakhiri

Wat Phu Tok - Wat Jetiyakhiri

Wat Phu Tok, also called Wat Jetiyakhiri, is a temple that was built in and around a mountain. You'll need good nerves, good shoes, good condition and some bottles of water, if you want to follow the path of the 7 steps to enlightenment on the mountain in Bueng Kan province.

Actually, this very special destination is almost too far away from Udon Thani city for a day trip, but if you set off in the morning early enough and take your own car, you can, in spite of the 175 kilometres trip, make the tour comfortably in one day.

From Udon Thani take highway 22 towards Sakon Nakhon. After Sawan Daen Din, turn north on road  2280 (which changes to road 222) in the direction of Seka and Bueng Kan and drive 73km. Turn right here towards the mountain and temple and follow the road for another 26 kilometres to Wat Phu Tok.

The temple was built by the highly revered Buddhist monk Phra Ajahn Juen in 1968. The seven stages that lead around and partly into the mountain, to the summit, symbolise the seven steps to the Buddhist spiritual enlightenment. On the way to the top you go over some lethal-looking boards, and you will see numerous meditation huts that are still used today by many monks. The actual temple is located on level 5 in a small cave. From there the trail goes over tree roots and dirt tracks to the highest level, the summit of the mountain.

The summit of this mountain is the ultimate goal of this trip. The breathtaking views and the feeling that comes to cautiously walk over the old wooden planks at high altitude, leave unforgettable impressions!

Between the 10th and the 16th April, the temple is closed to visitors!

Phu Tok is now in Bueng Kan Province. You are confusing a lot of us. It once was in Nong Khai Province which had a land split making it now Bueng Kan Province. If my friends had know it was not near NK they would have had a lot less driving to do. The postal code 38000 is correct though.
