In 2006 we visited the 200 square mile Erawan National Park, situated in the Western Thailand province of Kanchanaburi. The major attraction of the park is the seven-tiered Erawan Falls, a waterfall named after the erawan, the three-headed white elephant of Hindu mythology.

When the rainy season is over in Udon Thani, and the rice is ready to harvest, the workers take to the fields. Often, the fields are in their area too small to be worthwhile using a combine harvester. Here the harvested rice doesn't go to the markets, but is distributed amongst the farm workers and the families of the farmers.

If you drive from Udon Thani on the newly completed 4-lane highway 210 to Nongbua Lamphu and from there continue on towards Non Sang, then you drive alongside rice paddies almost all the way.

Khuen Mae Ngat reservoir in Chiang Mai

We were visiting Chiang Mai, where we spent some happy days. The timing of the trip had been chosen so that we'd miss the worst of the smog caused by open fires in the area of Chiang Mai. Fishing at Dream Lake Fishing Resort was also on the agenda, and about which we were very happy. Also, a trip the Mae Ngat Reservoir - Khuen Ngat Mae - was another day-out that promised us a wonderful time.

Erawan Cave

Finding the Erawan Cave is not difficult. Coming from Udon Thani the cave is clearly signposted. You just drive up the Nongbua Lamphu 4-lane highway 210 in the direction of Loei. After about 50 km turn right, and after a few minutes you'll reach the parking lot in front of the stairs to the cave.
