Wat Pa Phu Kon

Yesterday we visited an amazing temple complex: Wat Pu Pa Kon and it's new facilities, completed around late last year.

Udon-News thanks 'Maithai', a member of Udon News Forum for the following excellent report!

Drive about 120 km north-northwest of Udon Thani to Ban Phue, and then Na Yung Nam Som. Near there (see the GPS data and map at the end of the article) the property is situated on a mountain.

Wat Pa Phu Kon - Die Zufahrtsstraße

The access road

Even the entrance is impressive. At times you need to be in first gear up the hill and through the forests.

Wat Pa Phu Kon - Die Zugangstreppe

The access stairs

The access stairs ascend from the parking area. Even on a Sunday there were hardly any visitors.

Wat Pa Phu Kon - Das Hauptgebäude

The Main Building

This is the main building on top of the mountain peak. To us it's absolutely beautiful, temple architecture with a great sense of style. Not overdone or cheesy like many other buildings. There's plenty of glass mosaics, and the effect is stunning!

Wat Pa Phu Kon - Die Wächter am Eingang

The guard at the entrance

The dragon guarding the entrance! Ccarved from a single piece of Italian Carrara marble. Almost as good as Michelangelo!

Wat Pa Phu Kon - Der liegende Buddha 1

The reclining Buddha 1

Inside is the main attraction of the temple; the over 20m plus long reclining Bhudda, again sculpted from white Italian Carrara marble, lying on a pillow. It's composed of 43 blocks of stone, each of 15 - 30 tons. Everything was sent to Thailand by boat. You can see photos of monks in the Carrara quarries mind choosing the stones.

The reclining Buddha 2

Everything here was built using a donation by an elderly woman in honor of the king. The character was first created and then the entire temple built around it later. The cost of the figure was about 50 million THB, and for the entire complex about 320 million THB. It looks great and will certainly inspire many future  generations.

Wat Pa Phu Kon - Die großen Eingangstüren

The large entrance doors, with reliefs and hinges made entirely of bronze.

Wat Pa Phu Kon - Die Aussicht vom Tempel

The view from the temple - magnificent! So, that's it! If you've got the desire, then take a trip there - you won't be disappointed.
