The Saturday Night Market in Nong Khai

Been before? The Saturday night market in Nong Khai is well worth a look. It's held every Saturday from 5 to 10 pm on the waterfront - Rim Kong Road to Walking Street - in the upstream direction. From Udon Thani it's about 63 Km.

The coordinates and a map can be found at the bottom of the page.

Udon-News thanks forum member Maithai for this excellent report.

Here you can stroll along the banks of the beautiful Mekong River and take in the colorful and lively atmosphere. We have visited this market often - and every time it has continued to expand.

We can here only show a small selection of the countless things offered, with the hope that the atmosphere is palpable.
(The photo quality is quite modest - in the dark without a tripod or a flash - sorry).

There's a huge contrast to the conventional Indo China Market. Here, everything is much more cheerful and relaxed. Many young people sell their wares, unusual and often homemade.

Pies and covered cakes are sold here. The last time we came we bought a pie with spinach and ham filling, and one with chicken and vegetable filling for 45 baht each. Back at home in the microwave, they tasted great!

Fragrant soaps with the shape and smell of fruit.

In between the stalls, street musicians play traditional music.
Isn't he great? Toothless and smiling, this is what's called local colour.

A beautiful mood is created by so many colourful lanterns and lamps. There's a whole lot going on, and a remarkable number of farangs!

Very nice soaps, homemade by the couple themselves, with natural ingredients, great smelling. 2 large bars cost 40 baht each.

A delegation of students from the local campus were running a fun auction to raise funds for their work with the village children. Commendable.

This engrossed artisan is making delicious balls of dough, fried with various ingredients such as shrimp. Maybe finished off with a little red, sour sauce, then a lattice of white sauce and finally some black seaweed strips for a really artistic product!

Here pork and beef is fried, previously dried in the sun on bamboo rings. Nua Dead Diao and Moo Dead Diao (they taste great, but tight-fitting dentures are an advantage)

For dessert; flavors of Thailand! (Not to my taste!).

An amazing, funny thing! I've never seen egg on a skewer before!
Surprising what you can eat on the move!

Even more amazing; there are even separate pans for them! (in sooo beautiful colours). Some people think of everything.

So - enough for today. Everyone will find their own favorites here.
Well worth a visit. With a gentle breeze in the evening, walk along the Mekong and snack on some tasty stuff - what more could you want!

Maithai
