The Mekong - Nong Khai

At times we leave Udon and drive about 30 miles north to Nong Khai. There, there is a German bakery (which we will write a separate article about), the Indochina market, and of course the Mekong river. This mighty river flows from Tibet through SE Asia and is about 2,800 miles long. It flows through China, then forms the border between Myanmar and Laos, then between Thailand and Laos, then through Laos, followed by Cambodia and finally Vietnam before it empties into the South China Sea.

The amount of water that swells the river in the rainy season is remarkable. The first photo was taken at a time when the river was at it's normal level. Both pictures show the Laotian bank of the Mekong.

The second image shows the Mekong on 14/09/2011. I guess the inhabitants of the houses on the Lao side of the river are getting nervous.

By the way, Bangkok is only 615 km away.

Anyone coming from Bangkok to visit Nong Khai could endure a long bus or train journey, or fly to Udon airport and take a minibus, which will take about another 45 minutes to reach Nong Khai.
