Suan Hin Pha Ngam Park

Suan Hin Pha Ngam Park is also known as the Thai Kunming, because of its resemblance to the world-famous rock garden near the city of Kunming in China, which is listed as a World Heritage Site.

Udon-News thanks forum member Maithai for this excellent report.

From Udon Thani take Highway 210 to Nong Bua Lamphu and then Loei. After about 126 km, turn left onto Highway 201 and continue to the village of Nong Hin. From there, a minor road is signposted about 20 km to your destination. The total is about 159 km.

You'll see this sign at the entrance:

After a short drive you'll arrive at the visitor centre.

Address: Moo 10, Pha Ngam Road, Puan Phu Nong Hin, Loei 42190
Open daily 8am to 6pm.
Tel: 04280-1900, 08-14621719

Here are the quaint vehicles for your tour.

In the small visitor centre you hire a guide. The fee is 100 baht for a group of up to 10 people. The trip back by tractor costs 15 baht per person. A guide is absolutely necessary, because after a short time one your own you would surely be lost!

The tour lasts about 90 minutes and starts quite slowly. On concrete paths you will pass through the old temple site set in bizarre rock formations. Like here; the rabbit.

Via stairs it goes higher and higher into the rocks.

The whole formation consists of limestone, a seabed sediment, which was pushed up by earth's crust approximately 230-280 million years ago. Millions of years of erosion then formed the rock to bizarre appearances. There are isolated pockets of fossilized shells and animals.

In a clearing there's a a large Buddha figure left over from a previous temple.

After that, it is pretty exciting. Very narrow canyons and corridors lead you on step by step. The atmosphere and the light are great, and it's easy to get a sense of smallness before so much violent, oppressive nature.

On all fours we struggle on!

That's Mr. Big, our guide.

It's also impressive to see how the plants grow there. Since ancient times, untouched, with amazingly long roots searching for water amongst the rocks, and branches reaching upwards to the light.

High above there's a fragile observation deck with a great view of the rock formations.

We made it! At the exit there's some medicine and souvenir shops.

Our Porsche for the way back to the parking lot is already there.

And so we head towards home.

A beautiful experience; impressive nature, something truly special. If you fancy a 2-day getaway, you could also visit the the National Park at Phu Kradueng.
