Ban Chiang World Heritage Site

Hi there!

Today we're going to Ban Chiang UNESCO World Heritage Site, one of five in Thailand. From Udon Thani it's on the road to Sakhon Nakhon.

Udon-News thanks 'Maithai', a member of Udon News Forum for the following excellent report!

About 40 km from the Big C intersection, turn left to Ban Chiang. After another 8 km you will see the entrance to Ban Chiang National Museum

Open from 9am to 4pm, closed on Mondays.

We last came here in 2001, and things looked very different; smaller, more provincial and dirty. Now there is a newly built (2006) museum complex, which is very impressive.

The exhibition is modern with bright and cheerful colours. Chronologically, the individual excavation steps are shown and explained. The first excavations began in 1966 after findings of ceramics and house construction.

The first finds suggested that the area was inhabited 6000 years ago and had a highly developed culture. Subsequent radio-carbon tests dated the finds to about 2000 BC (however, this is usually not mentioned - the older the better!)

in the gallery you can see archaeologists conducting their studies. It is a very proud claim that here the cradle of the Bronze Age in the whole of Asia was discovered. Many schoolchildren and coaches of tourists come here!

It's impressive that so much has survived over several thousand years.

In the lower part of the exhibition it's more entertaining than scientific

Finally, the large variety of ceramics and bronze objects is shown again here in chronological order.

So, that's it with the museum. Outside, you can find many shops with tourist stuff - and with some very nice replicas of the painted pottery at low prices.

That's it! Unfortunately, we can show here only a small part of the site, only a first impression and incentive for visiting yourself!

Have fun!
