A Short Visit to Laos

Recently I found myself having to visit Vientiane in Laos to get a Thai visa. Information about this can be read in this article. The most popular area to stay in Vientiane is along the river. This is the nightlife centre, with many hotels and guest-houses catering to the hordes of visiting foreigners. I chose instead to stay at a hotel near the embassy (consular section), in the Sisattanak region. I'd stayed at the La Ong Dao Hotel 1 before, several years ago, and then it was cheap, clean and relatively new. This time it was still cheap (about 700 baht per night) and clean, but my room was showing its age. There are several other hotels in this area, of various standards and prices, and even one that is across the road from the consulate, the Douangpraseuth Hotel.

The La Ong Dao doesn't have a restaurant, but within a few hundred yards there is a large number of restaurants to choose from. On my first evening there I dined at The Pizza Company, good food but a little expensive.

The next morning I spent a gruelling three hours queueing to apply for my visa at the Thai Consulate.

In the afternoon I walked to the city centre, where I saw the impressive Patuxai Gate monument, inspired by the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.

The main park was clean and well manicured, and had some beautiful and huge trees.

That evening I dined at the Delhi Durbar, a very pleasant Indian restaurant a couple of minutes walk from my hotel.

Next day, I collected my visa, then straight back home to Udon.
