150 Million Year Stone Shell Museum

Today we went to the local Jurassic Park, the dinosaur museum. From the Udon Thani ring road head towards Nong Bua Lamphu, and after about 31 km you'll see it on the right.

Udon-News thanks 'Maithai',  a member of the Udon-News Forum,  for theis excellent report!

These relics were unearthed here in the year 2000, the first finds from the late Jurassic period. Subsequent excavations have uncovered about 80 bones of a Phuwiangosaurus, or Phu Wiang lizard. This is the most significant find in this area.

Figures like this are surely only for the children to enjoy!

In the same area there is also the shrine of Phra Somdej Naesuan Maharat, a king of Ayutthaya from 1590 to 1605. He was thought to be connected to cockfighting, hence the hundreds of donated chicken statues outside.

The second museum area is dedicated to dinosaurs and Stone Age life. In showcases and panels is described (in Thai and English) the story of the dinosaurs and human life in the Stone Age (even though dinosaurs and humans bever co-existed). It's much clearer than the previous museum building, but all more in the style of a children's school book.

The main attraction here is a life-size Tyrannosaurus robot that moves and emits eerie sounds, giving endless photo opportunity for visitors.

Outside, you can see the archaeological sites (unspectacular). From the standpoint of professional interest, this museum offers no satisfaction! From the perspective of children, entire school classes, Thai families and so on, this is all fine and quite impressive. You decide!

Near Khon Kaen, in Phu Wiang , there is  a much bigger and better museum and dinosaur park - we will report on this.

Have fun !
